Cleveland Movie Traffic

If you are a fan of Marvel Comic Books, each time a film made from one of their comics is an event to celebrate. The filming of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, particularly if you lived in Chicago was no exception. This site was originally created to keep folks in Chicago aware of the filming and how it might affect their daily lives!

Once the filmong was over and the film released this site 's function ceased and the domain was left to expire. Imagine my surprise when I recently discovered that the site's domain was available. I decided to buy it with the goal of recreating as much of its original content as possible from its archived pages. I did not want someone else to purchase the domain and re-purpose the site for something that had nothing in common with the original website.

PLEASE NOTE: The information on this page was gleaned from a number of sources including archived content from the original site.

If you lived in Chicago during the filming of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and come across this site, I hope it brings back some of the fun and excitement, and maybe some of the frustrations of traffic issues that were all part of the filming. Enjoy.>/

For immediate release: May 13, 2013

As you all know "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," The Marvel action-thriller, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, started filming in Cleveland on Monday, May 20, 2013. The filming is expected to last about 6 weeks with a crew of about 300 handling everything from the art production to the high-speed chases and crashes.

May 31, 2013 Update

The stretch of Shoreway that is closed as of Friday, May 31, is from Lake Avenue near Edgewater Park to East Ninth Street near the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. As of now the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority is planning
to closing of the highway for approximately two weeks while various high-speed chases and crashes that are part of the movie plotline can be filmed.  The highway will be inaccessible to gawkers, only the film crews are allowed on this part of Shoreway. We have been told by Ivan Schwarz, president of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission that the chases and crashes are part of a long scene that climaxes in a massive smash-up/ gun battle scene in front of the Justice Center.

UPDATE for Road Closing and Rerouting for May 31

The West Shoreway was closed around 4:30 a.m. today for filming, after a day's delay.

Commuters, prepare yourself for some major stop-and-go along the single-lane Detroit, and detours once you finally arrive downtown. Police are overseeing the route and restrict traffic as needed during filming. Be aware that according to the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority the eastbound lanes will be completely closed from Lake Avenue to East Ninth Street while the westbound lanes will be closed from Lake Avenue to the Edgewater Park exit and from West 49th Street to East Ninth Street.

Adding to your travails, Superior Avenue is also closed today from East 12th Street to Ontario.  So is East 3rd between Superior and Rockwell.  And to add to the fun, traffic will also be disrupted at times at East 6th between Vincent and Rockwell and East 9th between Walnut and Rockwell.

I can't believe I am in the middle of the worse traffic mess. We would be in a terribly fix if we were not following the van that is carrying all our household belongings. We are in the process of moving from Baltimore to Cleveland and the van of our movers,Von Paris Moving & Storage, is distinctive enough, so even though we are now four cars behind them, we are not lost. The day my wife did a search for movers Baltimore and selected Von Paris, an angel was watching out for us. These guys are the best movers ever. Just stay in view. Hey, I just heard all this traffic is due to the filming of #CaptainAmerica. Well, that explains what's going on. What a memorable welcome to Cleveland. This is just crazy. Gotta go, the traffic is now moving.

Now For Additional Film Locations Around Cleveland

Other location points around the city include the Lorain Avenue Bridge. On Friday, June 21, the bridge will be used in major scenes featuring Scarlett Johansson as The Black Widow.

On Monday, June 24 as the production begins its fith week here, the cast and crew are inside the Cleveland Museum of Art.  Lining East Boulevard and Wade Oval Drive are several large equipment trucks. It looks like it will be a bad day for all you superhero-gawkers, since the action is indoors. At least the traffic isn’t going to be as bad as it has been. Although on Wednesday night head over to East Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue. There will be filming in the evening.

It’s been exciting to say the least. There have been a lot of very public explosions, gunfire, fights, and car chases in downtown Cleveland, including spots along East Sixth Street, Superior Avenue, West Third Street and the West Shoreway which they closed off to us gawkers. Curse #@*!!

If you live out in Tremont you might have seen the crew filming at the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Tremont, as well as inside private homes in Tremont and Cleveland Heights.

Wednesday night the production will shift to East Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue.

Lots of folks have caught glimpses of such stars of the film as Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Frank Grillo  and Hayley Atwell among others. Everyone is still waiting for the first sighting of Robert Redford, who plays S.H.I.E.L.D's Alexander Pierce.

Update June 28, 2013 at 10:31 AM

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" wrapped its nearly six-week production on Thursday. Will we miss all the excitement? You betcha! Will we miss the snarled traffic and crazy delays? Nope. Obviously, a film production that comes in and shuts down roads, complicating people's daily commute is not one of the initial benefits of being the film’s location. However, film productions bring lots of money  and jobs to Cleveland. That we do welcome.

The movie is supposed to be released on April 4, 2014.
